Who we are

Heart Centre Paediatric Unit

The Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre’s Paediatric Unit offers our patients a unique, multidisciplinary approach. This ensures a deep understanding of children’s unique medical needs, and a commitment to treating not just illnesses, but fostering a child’s overall well-being and development.

What To Expect

Visiting our paediatric unit can be a new experience for both children and their families. Here’s some of the things you may expect to experience when you arrive

Child-Friendly Environment

Our paediatric unit and specialist consulting rooms are designed to be welcoming and comforting for children, with bright colours, playful decor, and a non-intimidating atmosphere. There may be toys, books, and other activities to help children feel at ease while waiting.

Welcoming Reception

Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by friendly staff at the reception. They will confirm your appointment or help guide you to the correct area for your visit. If it's your first visit, you may need to complete some paperwork regarding your child's medical history and other relevant information.

Initial Assessment

A paediatric nurse will typically start with basic checks such as weight, height, and vital signs (temperature, heart rate, blood pressure). This helps track your child’s growth and development and provides initial information for the doctor. The nurse may ask about your child’s symptoms, medical history, medications, allergies, and any concerns you might have.

Meeting the Specialist

Depending on the reason for your visit, you will then meet a paediatrician or a specialist (e.g., paediatric cardiologist, endocrinologist, etc.). They will carefully examine your child, review any necessary tests or reports, and discuss symptoms or concerns in detail. The doctor will use child-friendly language and gentle methods to ensure your child feels comfortable during the examination.

Diagnostic Tests or Imaging (if needed)

If necessary, the doctor may order tests such as blood work, X-rays, ultrasound, or other diagnostic tools. These procedures are carried out by trained technicians who are experienced in working with children, ensuring a calm, safe process. For some specialties (e.g., paediatric cardiology or pulmonology), more specialized tests like echocardiograms or pulmonary function tests may be required.

Collaboration with Multiple Specialists (if needed)

In complex cases or when multiple issues are involved, your child may see more than one specialist. The paediatric unit’s multidisciplinary team works closely together to ensure comprehensive, coordinated care.

Treatment Plan

After evaluation, the specialist will discuss a treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs. This may include medications, lifestyle recommendations, follow-up appointments, or referrals to other specialists for further care. The team will also explain the purpose and process of any upcoming procedures or surgeries if required.

Family-Centred Approach

The paediatric unit emphasizes the involvement of parents and caregivers. You will be encouraged to ask questions and share any concerns. The staff will provide you with clear explanations of your child’s condition, treatment options, and next steps. You might also receive educational materials or counselling, especially if your child has a chronic condition or requires long-term care.

Follow-Up and Monitoring

Many paediatric conditions require ongoing monitoring and follow-up visits. The team will schedule these visits and explain what to watch for in terms of your child’s symptoms or progress. Routine check-ups ensure that your child’s treatment remains on track.

Support Services

Depending on your child’s needs, the unit may offer or recommend additional support services such as child life specialists, psychologists, or social workers to help manage any emotional, developmental, or behavioural challenges. If your child needs surgery or a long-term treatment plan, you can expect guidance and support through the entire process.

Comfort and Child-Focused Care

Throughout your visit, the paediatric team is focused on keeping your child as comfortable as possible. They use child-sized equipment and techniques to minimize discomfort and anxiety. Parents are often encouraged to stay with their child during procedures to provide emotional support.
